Frequently Asked Questions
What is the goal of the Partnership?
The Partnership, through its extensive network, aims to bring private sector resources and technical expertise to bear on existing host country programs and many efforts of PEPFAR HIV prevention implementing partners working to curb the epidemic among young people.
Why was Kenya chosen as the pilot country?
Kenya is at the forefront of the drive to reduce HIV rates among youth. The combination of political leverage and on-the-ground expertise made Kenya the ideal location for an innovative partnership aiming to change the way we fight the disease. According to the 2007 Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey, prevalence among youth aged 15-24 years was 3.8% and nearly 84% of respondents found to be HIV-infected were not aware they carried the virus.
What role to youth play?
Not only are young people beneficiaries of our prevention initiatives, but they are intimately involved in their design and functionality. HIV-Free Generation ensures that youth are engaged in multiple areas of the project so that our interventions remain effective and relevant. For example, in Kenya youth are represented on the Kenya Steering Committee, which is responsible for the strategic direction and decision-making for HFG/Kenya. In addition, youth assume leadership positions on communications outreach and education and participate in focus groups designed to get their perspectives and feedback on activities and programmatic approaches.
